Bayanne House was originally at the centre of a small estate created in the late 18th century by the Hoseason family of Yell. Many changes in fortune and ownership have resulted in its present extent of only 4.5 acres on the shores of Basta Voe. This small parcel of relatively rich inbye agricultural land supports an enormous range of local flora and fauna. The croft is designated as an Environmentally Sensitive Area because of this diversity of wildlife and is managed in an ecologically friendly way. Visitors can walk along the beach and watch for otters, seals and wading birds or stroll around the croft looking for wild flowers. The craft facility was completed in September 2000 to provide a venue for visitors to observe the production of knitted art. Inspired by the landscape and using local materials, three-dimensional interpretations of the environment are created in Shetland wool. The Tafts of Bayanne have been known as an ancient settlement for many years but only between 1995 and 1997 has formal archaeological work been carried out. During the excavation period a large number of finds lead the digging team to believe that this site may well date from at least the Middle Bronze Age and was occupied into the Early Historic period.
