Edgar Wood's Long Street Methodist Church is unique – a church, school and lecture room enclosing an Arts & Crafts garden accessed by an Art Nouveau gateway. When opened in 1900, the Church and School were the most advanced in Britain. The design of the church was highly influential while the school anticipated modern child-centred education. They are amongst the finest expressions of Arts and Crafts architecture. Today, the buildings are at the heart of Middleton Heritage – a heritage community with regular events and activities. The school (the Middleton Edgar Wood Centre) is a popular community venue – a village hall.
