Bamburgh is a small, picturesque village dominated by an imposing medieval castle, which is still inhabited today. Despite its sleepy appearance, Bamburgh has been a pivotal site throughout the history of the British Isles. Just a few examples of the amazing wealth of archaeology and history in Bamburgh are: Mesolithic flint scatters; Bronze Age barrows; The Northumbrian capital for several centuries in the early Medieval period; an Anglo-Saxon well, church and possible trading port; an intact Norman keep; a 12th century church within the castle; complex Medieval defences; a Medieval leper hospital; A Dominican friary; Extensive post medieval remodelling of the castle and village; and modern rebuilding of the castle by the industrialist Lord Armstrong. Bamburgh Research Project was started in 1996, in order to create a better understanding of the archaeology and history of Bamburgh and its environment. The multi phase, multiple site nature of Bamburgh makes it an ideal place to train the next generation of field archaeologists. Bamburgh Research Project provides an ideal environment for the training of students. We offer a wide range of education opportunities from basic field techniques through to supervisory roles. We run a summer field excavation during June and July each year which is open to all ages (under 16's must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). We encourage applications from people of all abilities and experience levels from beginners to seasoned professionals. The project runs a media team as part of the archaeological recording of the site, and each year there are several places for people wishing to participate exclusively in this aspect of the project. A further two places are available for people wishing to create and implement a series of activities aimed exclusively at working with young people and children in an educational capacity, and working together with castle administration to develop the on site interpretation of the castle's archaeology. Several internship places are available each year, which can be tailored to the individual to a certain extent. The advantage of these internships is a reduced fee and the opportunity to get involved to a greater extent than students who come for shorter periods. Outside of the excavation season the project team work on a voluntary basis producing analyses and publications. We are committed to reaching the wider community and bringing the history and culture of Bamburgh to schools and community groups through lectures and events throughout the year and we would be happy to hear from anyone wishing to make use of the archaeological resources of the project for schools or community participation, or simply to book a lecture.
