Society of Genealogists

14 Charterhouse Buildings, Goswell Road
Greater London

Join us for an extensive tour of our splendid genealogical Library and Education Centre in Clerkenwell. Your experienced Tour Guide, and other staff, are looking forward to showing you round three floors of family history treasures and records, directories and databases - over 120,000 items. Founded in 1911, the Society of Genealogists is Britain’s National Family History Centre. You will find our collections are particularly valuable for research before the start of civil registration of births, marriages and deaths in 1837. Your Guide will explain sources for family history research that you may not have used before. The Society holds many unique, unpublished manuscript notes and printed and unpublished family histories. Its Library contains Britain’s largest collection of parish register copies and many nonconformist registers. We also hold local histories, copies of churchyard gravestone inscriptions, poll books, trade directories, census indexes and a wealth of information about the parishes where our ancestors lived. Your Guide will introduce you to our Collections, as the UK-wide repository for family history documents and records. Our Collections contain amazing items steeped in the UK's rich and diverse cultural heritage. They relate to over 44,000 surnames - yours is probably included. Many documents are originals, some date back to the 15th century, and some are beautiful to look at. You can find marriage settlements, deeds, certificates, wills, photographs, newspaper clippings, probates, family coat of arms and letters. They give us a tremendous insight into what life was like for our ancestors. Your Guide will demonstrate how to find records and information on our Catalogue and in our Library. The Society Catalogue, SoGCAT, is the Society of Genealogists' online library catalogue. It lists the details of everything in the library at our premises in London.
