14 Charterhouse Buildings, Goswell Road
Live on Zoom Some things just never change. Lighting and fuel has always been an important element in a family budget. For Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters, candle use in their novels was a shorthand for social class and a family’s wealth. In this talk, Adele Emm asks how did the Candle Tax (1709-1831) and the introduction of gas and electric lighting affect your ancestors’ home lives? There will be a question and answer session after the talk. There are no special entry requirements for this talk and you do not need to be a Member of the Society of Genealogists to attend. Expect a friendly atmosphere, an expert tutor and lots of detail.
