St Mary's Gate
The title of this exhibition ‘Put That Light Out’ is taken from a line that often appeared in Dad’s Army and was said by Bill Pertwee in his role as the ARP Warden. It was the job of The Air Raid Precautions Warden to make sure that the black out was kept, and the exhibition will feature an ARP Post. We will explore life in Chesterfield during World War II, including rationing, holidays at home, the Women’s Voluntary Service and the Home Guard. In May, the first floor gallery will join in with an exhibition on Houses and Homes looking at social housing and the 1940s house in particular.
