The New Axminster Heritage Centre Brand new displays include a children's trail, and a 1930s Crabtree Axminster carpet loom, which we occasionally run. We tell the story of Axminster and its surrounding villages from pre-history, through Roman times, developing into a busy agricultural market town. There’s a special focus on our carpet industry, founded by Thomas Whitty in 1755, with an original 18th century loom and a beautiful 1769 Whitty carpet. In the 19th century Axminster was an important brush making centre, notably for toothbrushes. Temporary exhibitions and courses provide lots to see and do. All housed in a factory built by the Whitty family, which subsequently served as a court-house and a hospital.
