Harewood House, one of England's greatest country houses, created by architect John Carr and designer Robert Adam, furnished by master cabinet-maker Thomas Chippendale and set in a landscape created by 'Capability' Brown. The House, renowned for its stunning architecture and exquisite Adam interiors, contains a rich collection of Chippendale furniture, fine porcelain and outstanding art collections from Italian Renaissance masterpieces and Turner watercolours to contemporary works. Lord Harewood's mother, HRH Princess Mary, Princess Royal, lived at Harewood for 35 years and much of her Royal memorabilia is still displayed. The Old Kitchen contains "the best collection of noble household copperware in the country" giving visitors a glimpse into an essential area of yesteryear's below stairs life. In contrast the Terrace Gallery is a nationally recognised venue for many high profile contemporary artists. The inspiring Grounds and Gardens include a restored parterre Terrace, oriental Rock Garden, Bhutanese Stupa, Walled Garden, lakeside and woodland walks, the Bird Garden and for youngsters, the thrills and excitement of the Adventure Playground! Throughout the season Harewood hosts a number of special events including open-air concerts, theatre performances, craft fairs, car rallies and much more. Harewood House is easily accessible and is just 20 minutes drive from Leeds City Centre or Harrogate and 45 minutes from York. The entire collection at Harewood House is a Designated Collection of national importance.
