Museum created by PHG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) housing his collections from 25 expeditions to Africa and 5 trips to SE Asia between 1889 and 1939 (26 years actually on African soil). Three galleries of amazing animal diorama displays - the finest in this country - depicting more than 250 African and Asian mammals against their natural habitats. A further five large galleries displaying a vast collection of African ethnographic artefacts, European firearms, European and Asian cutting weopons, European porcelain and Chinese export and imperial porcelain, and important archaeological finds from Thanet and East Kent. Six public rooms in the Regency House showing Oriental and English period furniture, English and Dutch glass and a small collection of clocks.

The Powell-Cotton Museum, Quex House & Gardens lie at the heart of Quex Park on the southern boundary of Birchington, a coastal village west of Margate in Kent the home of the NEW Turner Contemporary, about 75 miles from London, 12 miles from the historic city of Canterbury and 4 miles from the ferry port of Ramsgate. FREE parking for cars and coaches. Disabled parking is located close to the museum entrance. BY ROAD: from London take the M2, or from Canterbury the A28, and follow the signs for Margate. As you enter Birchington, the Powell-Cotton Museum is clearly signposted alongside All Saints Church (which is on your left). Turn right into Park Lane following directions to Acol. The entrance to Quex Park and the Museum is half a mile on the left. Please note: If using SAT NAV please ignore the instruction to turn right at this point. BY RAIL: the journey from London Victoria to Birchington-on-Sea, takes around 1 3/4 hours. The pleasant 1 mile walk along Station Road and Park Lane takes about 20 minutes, although taxis are available. The Highspeed train from St Pancras to Margate takes 1 hour 20 minutes. BY BUS: Thanet's number 8 bus stops at Birchington Square. The half mile walk along Park Lane and into Quex Park takes under 10 minutes.
